Disability rights bill signed into kenyan law

In a landmark legislation, sponsored by Senator Crystal Asige, repeals the outdated 2003 Act and establishes a robust, constitution-aligned framework for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), at State House Nairobi today, President William Ruto has assented to the Persons with Disabilities Bill 2023. A new progressive law that guarantees and affirms the rights of PWDs to education, employment, healthcare, political participation while mandating both National and County Governments and indeed the private sectors to fulfill their obligations.  

The law also recognizes and protects the rights of the neurodivergent community and promotes gender balance in Parliament, marking a significant step toward a more inclusive Kenya.

The event, which charged an accessible fee to ensure broad participation, was hailed as a resounding success—a testament to the power of community spirit and the shared goal of creating an inclusive, supportive environment for autism families.

Under the uplifting theme "Cheers to the journey!", the event created a warm, welcoming space where caregivers shared stories of resilience, celebrated both big and small victories, and found connection in their shared experiences. With favourite drinks in hand, attendees enjoyed an evening filled with laughter, reflection, and encouragement. The online format allowed for a rich diversity of voices and heartfelt conversations, making it a fitting and successful finale to a month dedicated to awareness, acceptance, and community.
